The Department of Community Medicine focuses on teaching and training of undergraduate medical students, Postgraduate students (MD in Community Medicine), Students of Nursing, Dental and Physiotherapy.

The community orientation program is a unique endeavor at Navodaya Medical College to ensure value-based education to the undergraduate medical students and help in moulding a basic doctor of first contact. The chief objectives of the program are to ensure value education through service to marginalized groups – people living in villages/slums/poorest of the poor and people with disability; strengthen skill and attitude input to undergraduate students to help them serve later as effective doctors and leaders in the society.

The program comprises pre-orientation workshops followed by residential rural based training with subsequent urban & rural exposure. The program envisages to sensitize the medical graduates to the practical nuances of social and cultural ethos. Training of health care workers and community-based groups is also undertaken. Urban Health Centre- is located at Ashapur Road 1.5km away from Navodaya Medical College. UHC caters urban slum population the total population adapted is 18,980.

Activities at UHC

  • Primary Health care activities – Diagnosis and treatment of minor ailments free of cost.
  • ANC Clinic- on every Wednesday- registration of ANC cases, health checkup and immunization of mothers.
  • Immunization clinic-On every Thursdays. Immunization children against 6 vaccine preventable diseases.
  • Health education / IEC – is provided to all OPD cases and to the community about diet, hygiene environmental sanitation and infectious diseases prevention
  • Family planning- distribution of oral contraceptives pills, condos and insertion of Copper-T. Motivation of eligible couples for vasectomy and Tubectomy.
  • Referral services- Referral of cases those who need investigations and surgery, hospitalization and cases of ANC for institutional delivery.
  • Teaching activities- Family study, clinical postings, medico-social case study for the undergraduate and post graduate students. To acquaint the students for the functioning of UHC.
  • Maintenance of records- like OPD Register ANC Register, Copper-T Register, Oral pill register, condom register, Immunization register, drug register.
